Squirrel
Hill is a vibrant, dynamic community. A thriving business district offers a wide variety of non-chain shopping and restaurants. Over 1100 acres of public park provide countless opportunities for recreation (including lawn bowling!) and enjoyment within less than three square miles - some areas of the parks are as they were when the Indians used them as hunting grounds. With luck you might sight a deer, fox, raccoon, possum or turkey.

Squirrel Hill is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. The neighborhood is also one of the most affluent and well educated in the region. At the same time, there is a broad range of housing available from modest apartments to multimillion dollar homes.  The median housing price is $184,000 according to Kiplinger Magazine and the range is from $50,000 to over a million.

Squirrel Hill is home to two universities, Chatham College and Carnegie Mellon University.  Two others, the University of Pittsburgh and Carlow University,as well as the region’s medical center, UPMC, are just down the road.

Since the 1920s Squirrel Hill has been the center of the Jewish community. According to a 2002 study by the United Jewish Federation, a third of greater Pittsburgh’s Jewish population lives in Squirrel Hill. Counting adjacent communities, the Squirrel Hill area accounts for nearly 50% of the Jewish population in Pittsburgh.
