Parks and Open Spaces

The Parks and Open Space Committee promotes the preservation and continued vitality of our public spaces. The committee has been instrumental in developing a plan embraced by the City to develop a linear park from Frick Park to the Monongahela River. The public trail would link Frick and Schenley Parks through the area called Nine Mile Run.

We are working with the Steel Industry Heritage Corporation and Friends of the Riverfront in developing a trail along the Monongahela called the Steel Industry Heritage Trail as a connector.

The Parks and Open Space Committee needs assistance in accomplishing our objectives:

  • Greater visibility
  • Promote the values of connecting our communities via its green spaces
  • Highlight the values of open space along Pittsburgh's new frontier -- its riverbanks
  • Develop political/business/community organization allies for values of open spaces
  • Create a public campaign for community benefits
  • Create maps to show linkages
  • Promote public dedications of our open spaces

New Bridge over Duck Hollow

The City of Pittsburgh's Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is working on the Nine Mile Run bike/pedestrian trail from Commercial St (and Frick Park) to Duck Hollow and the Monongahela River. There are three segments of trail. Pittsburgh Department of Public Works will do the segment of trail close to Commercial St. A bridge over Nine Mile Run was contracted to Repal Construction and they began construction work in late 2009. As of May 2010, the bridge is in place. PennDOT is working with the URA on design of the trail segment close to Old Brown's Hill Rd. The segments upstream and downstream will be completed after the bridge. The completed trail will help connect Frick Park to the Duck Hollow Trail, and eventually across the Mon to the Great Allegheny Passage.
