Schenley Park maintenance facility proposed for East Circuit Road

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is proposing construction of a new maintenance/service building to house equipment used to maintain Schenley Park.  Maintenance equipment was previously housed behind Phipps Conservatory, an area that has been absorbed by construction of the Conservatory’s new education and administration building.

Several sites for the Schenley Park Maintenance Building have been considered (site comparative evaluation), and a location along East Circuit Road has been identified as the most viable.  A preliminary design (pictured above) has been developed for the site.  The site is adjacent to the 15th hole of the golf course near the Neill Cabin.  There is already an old maintenance building on the site.

The proposed building design incorporates several green design and sustainable living features including:

  • Building into the hillside to reduce the visible height of the building to about 6 feet.  It will also reduce the amount of heat needed during the winter and air-conditioning during the summer.
  • Capturing rainwater to use to wash equipment and flush toilets.
  • Situating windows to take advantage of cross-breezes and use natural light more effectively.
  • Green roofs to blend into the landscape.

The new building will increase the footprint to about 15,000 square feet; that's triple the size of the building currently on the premises.

Councilman Doug Shields has asked the Coalition to help coordinate community input. A “drive-through” visit of the site options is scheduled for Monday, January 29 at 2pm.  If you would like to participate in this review of the options, meet in the parking lot of the Schenley Park Golf Course where vans will be available to traverse the park.  Please phone the Coalition at 412-422-7666 or email info@shuc.org to RSVP so there will be enough vans to accommodate everyong.
